How is distance in light years calculated?

There are a few methods to evaluate distance. For relatively near objects (but outside of the solar system) parallax is used. This involves assessing the apparent motion of the star against a background of more distance stars due to the motion of earth in its orbit around the sun. This creates a triangle with a small angle, that is nevertheless measurable. From this method the unit "parsec" was coined: it is the distance that an object would be at in order to have this apparent motion to be 1 arc second (1/3600 of a degree) wide. A parsec is about 3.26 light years. This method works up to about 300 light years before the error grows to much. Beyond that, other methods, like intrinsic luminosity (the fact that the absolute brightness of a star is a function of its spectral type, and that its apparent brightness is thus dependent on its distance) are used. This method also applies to the intrinsic brioghtness of certain type of supernova, which can then be gauged to determine the distance to the galaxy that contains said star that went supernova. For very distant objects (million of light years away), the Doppler redshift, using the Hubble constant, is the best method.

It is not the moon's size that is a factor, it is the moon's proximity to us that matters. Venus comes between us and the sun sometimes, but it appears only a dot on the sun - and it it much larger than the moon. There is a lot of dark stuff out there, yes. But that stuff is small in comparison to the light sources out there, and very far away. Also, the majority of space is space - there is a lot of emptiness out there, with neither stars nor non-luminous items.

Are we building a spaceship that can travel light years?

In 1999, I constructed a machine in my small laboratory that could be used to propell a deep space research ship much faster than light speed. The machine I constructed actually lifted it's 1,800 lbs off the ground and hovered for a few minutes. I proved that mechanical energy can generate vertical or horazontal thrust indeffinately. But going faster than light speed would kill the people inside the ship because it would generate a deadly radiation. This type of high energy could only be used for unmanned explorations. I also changed on of the laws of physics when I constructed and tested this machine. This is the only way we can reach out and touch the alians. Plasma energy systems are doomed to fail. like everyone is saying, its not a big of deal as the tv makes it seem. You probably are thinking "then why are such drastic measures being taken?" The reason why its such a big deal its because its a new flu thats infecting people. It has infected humans before, but not like it is now. It is just like the flu, except we have no immunity to it, or so they know so far. They are still researching wheter any human has had immunity to it yet. That is the reason why so many schools are being closed and so on, because we arent immune to swine. But that doesnt mean its going to kill you, there is treatment ofcourse

Can technology ever overcome the speed of light?

I am hopeful.There are at least 3 reasons for being hopeful.there are real astronomical phenomenon which have been observed, some objects are moving much faster than the speed of light, one such example is the jets of Quasar 3C273 which are observed to be moving about 10 times speed of light! Like many other experiments people are trying to justify this observation consistent with relativity, there are reasons invented to somehow reduce the observed 10c speed of the jets to bring below 1c, but so far all these reasons and arguments don't seem convincing, therefore they are simply neglected, not discussed much, deliberately keep our eyes shut as they don't exist, BUT, this must be explored further, the Nature has shown us supernatural velocities exist, It is our choice if we want to keep our eyes shut and have faith in arbitrary postulates of relativity OR we should see what the Nature is showing us and have the courage to criticize our postulates and modify them.At present we do not have proper understanding of the VACUUM and the PHOTON. the speed of light is nothing but the speed of photon in the vacuum. Surprisingly, we do not understand both of them but we are perfectly certain about the velocity of one within the other. The basis of this certainty was ad-hock, somehow to get rid of the problems which were unable to solve, they were postulated to have some properties without any justification, and furthermore, the speed of light is related to the electromagnetic phenomenon only but they are imposed on massive particles and objects also without any reasoning and justification, and till date we are following blindly. This is not science. We must make serious effort to understand the properties of Vacuum and photon after having a good understanding of their properties it will be reasonable to claim speed of photon with certainty. Therefore, the maximum speed postulate is based on incomplete understanding, and I am hopeful that when we will have better understanding we will surpass this limit.The third reason is non scientific, but, in my view it is also very important. In astronomy we have discovered Galaxies on an average the spread of a Galaxy is in the range of 100 000 light year, we have discovered cluster of Galaxies which spread in the range of millions of light years we have discovered Super clusters, we have also discovered the deep far away Galaxies billions of light years away. I don't know how all these came into existence, I even don't know why human brain has the capability to understand this universe and why we have these intense curiosity to understand the Universe. Since there exist the Universe and since there exist human brains and the Nature has made sure that the human brains have the curiosity to understand the Universe, I don't see any reason why the Nature will limit us to explore a very tiny region of the Universe limited by the maximum speed of light, There must be a way the Nature must be hiding for the moment, to surpass the speed of light and explore the whole Universe, in my view, its just the matter of time, we will surpass the speed limit. Need to remember The Newton at this moment, he had just picked up a pebble and the vast see was in front of him waiting to be explored. My only submission is it seems we are in the wrong path following relativity, we have become stagnant, let us follow the path of Newton, let us desire to explore the vast sea.Finally, I think we are not limited by technology, even at this moment, to surpass the speed of light limit, we are limited by our belief.
