Purple Tones Set to Reign As Colour of the Year

Every year, colour forecasters all over the world predict the hues we will be shopping for in stores. These chosen colours can be seen not just in paint but also in textiles, materials and products.

This year two of North America’s best-known paint companies have released their colour of the year both with a movement away from cold harsh grey and towards a richer gem tone. For Dulux and Benjamin Moore, we can say that purple reigns.

Dulux promises the colour of the year will take you out of this world and into the ‘Starry Sky’. Inspired by outer space, Dulux has focused on this cosmic purple colour for your inner space.

“Purple is mysterious, exciting and calming at the same time, providing a stellar backdrop for a home-based sanctuary, even for those who may not be space enthusiasts,” says Martin Tustin-Fuchs, brand manager forDuluxPaints, announcing Starry Sky Purple as the brand’s Colour of the Year for 2017.

This new hue is gender-neutral and pairs well with other trendy colours so its easy to add to your décor. In the living room with the grey sofa, look at painting an accent wall in Starry Sky as well as adding a throw — the purple pairs perfectly with any shade of grey.

A match for earthy tones, Starry Sky blends with bland with browns, greens and taupes giving them that little pop to create a more glamourous look.

Even the kids will love this colour! You can create a space wall in the playroom or bedroom — have the kids help decorate by adding spaceships, stars, constellations, asteroids and more.

You can also take different shades of the Dulux colour of the year to add contrast and layers to a room. Start with a Starry Sky accent wall, add an eggplant rug, with lilac accessories like vases and candles then tie in your earthy beiges and greys to have a warm yet luxurious room ready for 2017.

Benjamin Moore is renowned for its expansive colour portfolio, offering consumers and designers more than 3,500 colours to choose from.

Last year, they kept it clean and simple with their colour of the year ‘Simply White’. This year they are getting a little shady and delving into the ‘Shadow’.

After a year of being pure and revealing, Benjamin Moore has decided to add an air of mystery with their shadowy mix of a deep purple with hints of grey.

The rich amethyst colour is both regal and dramatic — perfect for painting a grand entranceway or to give that pop of colour to a lavish dining or living room.

“Allusive and enigmatic, Shadow is a master of ambiance. It is a colour that calls to mind a ‘past’, yet it can also make a contemporary, colour-confident statement,” saysEllen O’Neill, Benjamin Moore creative director. “Shadow is sophisticated, provocative and poetic, it can bring energy to a space or harmony and a moment of respite.”

A colour chameleon, Shadow when paired with the right palette can look like a royal purple, a rich dark grey or even closer to a midnight tone.

With natural wood and more rustic hues in a contemporary home the purple colour shines through, however with darker blacks and greys in a more modern urban condo or loft setting Shadow can look like a mysterious midnight.

These sophisticated purple’s may not be the colour you had in mind for painting all the rooms in your home but a little bit of them throughout will add some finesse and grandeur to the regular greige palettes.

With two of the largest paint manufacturers choosing purple as a base for 2017 you are sure to see more of this popping up in furniture shops, décor stores, in home magazines and products.
