Alternate fuels?

You are correct that you could use electrolysis to convert water to hydrogen and oxygen and then the products from the fuel cell would be water that you could then reuse. The problem is that neither electrolysis nor fuel cells are 100% efficient. Even if they were, you would be consume the exact same amount of energy through the electrolysis process that you got out of the fuel cell. Since they are not 100% efficient, you will actually just be making a machine that will use energy - not generate any. It is a good thought though. Just remember that energy can not be created - it has to come from somewhere. The electrolysis process takes electrical energy and converts it to chemical potential energy that is stored in the hydrogen and oxygen. The fuel cell then takes that chemical potential energy and converts it to electricity which is then converted to mechanical energy.

Are you for alternative fuels?

Being in favor of alternative fuels is common sense and patriotic. Anything that would lessen our dependence on imported fuel is good for our national security. Right now, we have a very tenuous situation in the Middle East and a maniac in Venezuela. At any time we could have a disruption in our supply and bring us to a grinding halt. A great portion of our fuel comes from there. What this country needs is a "Manhatten Project" for fuel independence. Fortunately, we have solutions that already exist. Unfortunately, the ones being pushed are the wrong ones. Ethanol is a bad solution. There is only about 70% as much energy in a gallon of ethanol as a gallon of gas. It also takes more energy to produce than it gives. Hydrogen? Maybe in Star Wars but not now. The real answer is synfuels and oil shale. The technology already exists and has been used extensively. Hitler ran his war machine on synfuels. We have hundred of years worth right here.
