A phone (and almost every device incorporating a lithium ion battery) is equipped with a Battery Management Software that cuts out electricity to the battery the moment 100% charge is achieved. As a result, whether you plug your phone out immediately after it reaches 100% or six hours after it reaches 100%, there will not be any observable difference in the health of the battery.In other words, if you charge your phone from 10 PM to 6 AM or 4 AM to 6 AM, the amount of charge your phone's battery is going to hold and the number of hours of operation it will give you will be identical (assuming identical usage). Of course, if you compare two scenarios, one in which you charge your phone from 10 PM to 6 AM and the other where you charge between 10 PM and 12 AM, you will find your phone holding lesser charge through out the following day in the latter case and that's simply because your phone was discharging between 12 AM and 6 AM and you were not starting with 100% in the first place (in contrast, keeping it plugged in does not allow the battery to drain).Hope this helps!!

In assembly code it would just be a matter of testing a single bit and then setting another bit to 1 or 0, if you write C code close enough to that assembly code, then that might be what the compiler will turn it into. Compilers are usually very clever. Perhaps your code is already being converted to that assembly code, or maybe even something that is more efficient. If I were to personally do it then I would not care because you are over-optimizing a non-existent problem. But for the sake of being pedantic, then I would look into the compiled assembly code and verify that it is what I believe is the most efficient code.
