And while some prefer a traditional approach to parenting, others are willing to branch out and embrace some of the newer more contemporary trends with their decor, prep and toys.

So to help these parents stay ahead of the game, Pinterest recently revealed their list of the top parenting and children's trends to try in 2018 based on more than 200 billion ideas on the platform.

Here, FEMAIL takes a deeper look at the trends - from contemporary nurseries and weighted blankets to wall art and 'mum' jewellery.

'MOD' NURSERIES The days of 'baby-ish' furniture are over, with data showing an 85 per cent increase in saves for 'mature' and 'modern' nurseries.

Instead of character print bedding and boxes stuffed with colourful toys, parents are choosing more contemporary decor for their kids including monochrome themed furniture, chic boho looks and pastel colour palettes.

This is reflected in snaps posted by influencer and celebrity mothers including Bec Judd, Sophie Cachia and Rozalia Russian.

Rozalia opted for a 'cute little safari styled nursery' and used 'shades of soft blue, grey and white'.

'From the amazing cloud light, to the hot air balloons to the beautiful cloud mobile. His room looks like something out of a fairytale book,' she wrote on her blog TOYS FROM TREES Colourful plastic toys are no longer as popular, with parents favouring wooden options instead.

Saves for wooden toys have increased by a staggering 173 per cent in the past 12 months, with many purchasing wooden cars, wooden shopping carts and minimalistic wooden doll houses.

As a result, many parents are also opting for wooden, minimal themes with their decor in nurseries.

NEXT-LEVEL NESTING Instead of simply thinking of name options, preparing a nursery and packing a hospital bag, parents are now taking their baby prep to a whole new level.

Pre-baby bucket lists and vision boards are the new big trend and saves for 'baby prep' have risen by 207 per cent in the past 12 months.

Parents are also preparing three weeks worth of freezer meals ahead of time, writing detailed hospital bag checklists, checklists for each trimester and preparing charts that detail the baby's age, how much time they should be awake between naps and how many naps they should be having per day.

POM POMS Pom poms are the accessory of the year, with saves for pom pom decor up by a huge 444 per cent.

Pom pom rugs and mobiles are the top trends, with many parents sharing DIY versions online.

Other pom pom decorations include tiny ballerina toys, pom pom pens, pom pom garlands and flowers.

WEIGHTED BLANKETS These blankets are known for their calming, sleep-inducing 'super powers' and saves for them are up by 259 per cent this year.

In fact, according to Nana's Weighted Blankets , they are 'one of the most effective tools for helping those difficult to calm down, high energy sensory kids'.

'The therapeutic use of weight and "deep pressure" to the muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments allows the central nervous system to better interpret and integrate both tactile (sense of touch) and proprioceptive (sense of movement, body position, and pressure) input,' she wrote.

'This therapeutic concept and particular treatment is used in schools, clinics, homes, and communities worldwide. It is safe, effective, and can make enormous differences in children.' PERMA-FORTS While forts were once put up during playtime and for special occasions, parents are now erecting forts as part of the fulltime furniture.

The term 'forts' is up more than 100 per cent in saves, with parents saving and sharing all kinds of lavish fort designs on their accounts.

Notable forts include those created underneath raised beds, ones covered in twinkling fairy lights, teepee style designs and dreamy see-through creations.

TINY TRACKERS With saves for 'baby tracker' up 58 per cent, parents are searching and saving for everything from helpful apps to cheat sheets to track their baby's mini moments to big milestones.

Examples include baby care journals, printable memory books, newborn schedules and albums.

They are also embracing schedule lists, brain development logs and weight charts.

REMOVAL WALL ART Saves for wall decals are up by 219 per cent with removal wall art a favourite of stylish parents around the world.

Popular designs range from chic silhouettes and hand carved wooden creations to tree shapes and pastel stars.

Large framed canvases are also a popular addition, along with personalised words, mirrors and temporary watercolour looks.

ECO-FRIENDLY PRODUCTS Eco-friendly nappies, recycled clothes and planet-friendly materials are leaving a smaller footprint and are therefore more popular than ever.

In face, saves for eco-friendly clothing have risen by a huge 750 per cent in the past 12 months.

Parents are also embracing organic baby carriers, natural baby skin care, eco-friendly dummies and BPA free bottles.

MUM JEWELLERY Teething necklaces are a favourite of mums around the world, with saves for the term up by 146 per cent.

Teething jewellery and silicone jewellery look and feel like the real deal but double as a teething ring or safe chew toy for adventurous bubs.

According to one Australian brand, Bubba Chew , 'silicone jewellery is the perfect accessory for mums, by combining style and safety, each necklace is made from food grade silicone and is BPA ,Phthalates, PVC, cadmium and lead free'.
